Bangkok is a world-class metropolis and the capital and largest city of Thailand. Also known as the "City of Angels,"

it is located on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River and borders the Gulf of Thailand to the south. As the largest city on the Indochinese Peninsula and the second-largest in Southeast Asia, Bangkok serves as the nation's political, economic, commercial, transportation, cultural, technological, educational, and religious hub. With a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures, it truly embodies its nickname, “City of Angels.” Bangkok is a bustling international metropolis and a major center for precious metal and gemstone trading. The city contributes approximately 44% of Thailand’s total GDP and handles about 90% of the country’s foreign trade through the Port of Bangkok. Its tourism industry is highly developed, and the city has been ranked as one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

As a leading center for international events, Bangkok hosts between 200 to 300 international conferences annually. It is home to the headquarters of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), as well as regional offices of the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and over 20 other international organizations.

On February 15, 2022, the Thai Cabinet approved the Royal Society's proposal to officially change the city's English name from "Bangkok" to "Krung Thep Maha Nakhon."

According to the National Economic and Social Development Council of Thailand, the Bangkok Metropolitan Region recorded a gross regional product (GRP) of 6.14 trillion Thai Baht in 2023, with a population of 9.087 million. The broader Bangkok Metropolitan Area (Bangkok & Vicinities) had a GRP of 8.57 trillion Thai Baht and a population of 17.543 million in the same year.
